2016-17 Winter Series Sailing Results

Picture
Thanks to all skippers that turned out today for the Mad Hatters IOM sailing regatta, there were 6 IOM's and 3 DF95's   The wind was blowing from under the bridge, a large triangle was sailed twice, 8 races were held before lunch where some skippers dropped out and a further 4 races after lunch.

It was a good day for sailing with fairly constant wind with a few large gusts and some fickle winds (well it is Southchurch), there was a couple of patches of weed which slowed the boats down, but overall the lake was clear.
The results above show Angela took top spot, congratulations.

Note: For the IOM championship the 95's will be removed from the table.

11 skippers contested today's regatta in a brisk 14 mph westerly wind. We tried a windward gate today at Howard's suggestion & it proved a very good idea with our ever shifting wind direction, as no particular side of the gate was favorable all day.
Several skippers suffered technical issues during the day, luckily most were able to be fixed lakeside, & we saw no less than 9 different winners from the 12 completed races.

Tony sailed well enough to loose his handicap, but it was Pete Mann's consistent scoring that enabled him to take a well deserved overall win.
The standard of sailing is improving month on month in this class & provides some very entertaining racing to watch. However, we all need to do some work on our knowledge of the rules. Whilst we try not to be too anal about them, there were several incidents today where race leaders were infringed severely by other boats & lost places as a result. We only ask you know 3 rules, port/starboard, windward/leeward & room at the mark, you owe it to your fellow skippers to make an effort. Help is available if you ask.

That said may I say a huge thank you to every single one who turned out today & provided us with great racing & the usual, slightly close to the mark, humour that makes it fun to sail at our club.

The early sunshine encouraged our biggest ever entry of 15 DF65's for today's regatta, which, since the wind was in a favourable direction, we decided to sail as 1 fleet. Heeding the words of warning from the race officer about the slightly congested starts, everyone sailed with good discipline & we managed 10 races on a large course before the wind decided to do one around mid afternoon & we called it a day. 2 skippers, Lance & Dennis, sailed well enough to loose their handicaps today & will be joining the experts (?) on the longer courses from now on.

All day there was some really great racing throughout the fleet & it was very entertaining to watch the tacking battles on the beats.
With 3 skippers recording the same overall score, it was Lance who ended taking his first regatta win on count back.

I really must thank everyone for their efforts today, in what was the best club regatta I can remember in many a year.

A chilly, windless morning greeted the few skippers who turned out for today's regatta & it was considered cancelling the event. However, by 10.30 a light breeze had sprung up & 5 yachts had arrived so we decided to give it a go & enjoyed some very good clean close racing as both the wind & temperature improved. Howard had to leave half way through after achieving some good results, but it was John Moore who was the man to beat today & he who ended up the overall winner after 12 races.

A big thank you to all those made the effort today, it turned out to be an enjoyable day.

Today's DF65 regatta started cold but warmed up for the afternoon, 10 hardy skippers turned out, to chase each other around the lake, good clean racing over 12 rounds saw Angela take the win, 2 boats had to drop out, due to technical problems, congratulations to Pete Mann for finishing 3rd (thanks to Angela tweaking his boat).

12 skippers turned out in the fog for today's regatta in very light wind. Despite the testing conditions we managed 8 races before the majority decided to call it a day.
John Moore, Ralph Cooling & Mick lost their dragon racing virginity today, with both Ralph & Mick improving over the day & posting some good results, John's IOM sailing experience soon translated to the Dragons & saw him finish on the same points as Angela, but take the overall win on count back, also loosing his handicap in the process.
A huge thank you to all those who supported the weekends regattas in unpleasant weather, sailed with such good on water discipline & kept the banter funny.

8 skippers braved the weather to race today. The early breeze died away a little forcing a course change, but in all we managed 8 races before the cold & damp proved too much & we went home.
Some close racing from all produced 7 different race winners from the 8 races. Thank you to everyone for supporting the event.
